injection mortar is used for anchoring in a wide variety of substrates. It is often also referred to as bonding mortar or assembly mortar. In the following, we will inform you about the correct use of assembly mortar.

As a rule, we always refer to mortar cartridges with a dispensing gun. The alternative use of mortar cartridges is noted accordingly.
Fields of application injection mortar
Bonded mortar is used in two main areas of application. Firstly, in the construction industry for suitably solid substrates. For example, for concrete and aerated concrete. This requires the corresponding additional components. Such as an adhesive sleeve and an anchor rod or possibly also a threaded sleeve. A metric screw can then also be used.

And secondly in the field of mountaineering. In the rock, the injection mortar is used to attach the glue in bolt. In other words, it is used to attach the fixed points.
Check applications and approvals
Each adhesive has very specific applications and approvals. Depending on what you intend to do, only certain bonding mortars are suitable. It is therefore essential to check the applications specified on the product label. You must also clarify the approvals.

Use in masonry
The installation of fixing points requires a correspondingly solid substrate. This means that it must always be a solid type of masonry. Furthermore, there must not be too many cavities. This is because the bonding mortar “disappears” into the cavities. As a result, the bond may be too weak. In short: the fixing point could tear out!

Below is an informative explanatory video on the subject of composite mortar from our partner Fischer:

Use injection mortar in mountain sports
In alpinism, composite mortar is used to attach fixed points. This means that glue in bolt and climbing anchors as well as via ferrata components are attached to the rock in this way.

As a rule, composite mortar cartridges and a spray gun are used. All drilling holes are prepared first. Then you quickly rappel down from the top. During rappelling, all glue in bolt are quickly inserted. If you are quick enough, the adhesive will not harden in the static mixer.

“Always take enough static mixers with you into the wall. As a rule, the adhesive hardens so quickly that the mixers often clog up. This means that you need to allow for a sufficient quantity and buy considerably more static mixers than adhesive cartridges!

The following video shows the installation of a 10 x 80mm Fixe Classic glue in bolt. Please note! We strongly recommend two cleaning processes. The drilling diameter also depends on glue in bolt!

How much injection mortar order?
The amount of composite mortar required depends on the type of glue in bolt. The larger the hook, the larger the drill hole and consequently the greater the adhesive consumption.

In addition, cavities in the rock can cause the adhesive to “disappear”.

“As a rule of thumb, however. Approx. 15-17 medium glue in bolt (length approx. 80mm) can be glued in from a 300ml cartridge. For large glue in bolt (length 100mm) it is approx. 10-12 pieces.”

injection mortar near the sea
Do you want to set up a climbing route near the sea? Then please take note. Due to the strong chemical influences near the sea, special care must be taken here. This means that you must check the suitability of your bonding mortar! In short: it must be suitable for such “acidic” environments (salt water). Information on this can be found in the operating instructions or the manufacturer’s specifications.

We recommend the Fischer FIS AB 360 S. It has the corresponding specifications!
Source of danger “Pre-run”
During pressing, the injection mortar flows into the so-called static mixer. Only there do the two chemical components mix. A certain amount of adhesive is required for an ideal mixing ratio. Consequently, you always (!) have to squeeze out a small amount of the so-called “pre-run” first and throw it away.
Source of danger drilling hole
The use of bonded mortar requires an extremely clean drilling hole. This is the only way to achieve a positive fit between the substrate – mortar – glue in bolt. For this purpose, the drilling hole should be cleaned in at least two passes.

Firstly, blow out the drilling dust
Secondly, clean with a perforated brush
Repeat the process at least once!

Consequently, a blow out pumb and the matching perforated brush are essential. You can find these items right here in this product category. In addition, we also offer low-cost bolting sets!
Use of mortar cartridges
Mortar cartridges are an alternative form of using injection mortar. They are mainly used when only individual fixed points are to be attached. Although it is the same material, the processing is completely different.

Drill a hole with the appropriate diameter
2 cleaning processes
Insert mortar cartridge with sufficient adhesive volume
Drive in the hook and rotate at least 10 times through 360°
Spread excess adhesive

“The following applies to mortar cartridges. Without frequent rotation of the glue in bolt, the adhesive components will not mix. A sufficient number of rotations is therefore essential for a safe installation!”

In warm temperatures, the adhesive of mortar cartridges hardens terribly quickly. Therefore, use a heavy hammer and work very quickly.

Practical tip – warm temperatures
In summer, high temperatures cause some difficulties when processing injection mortar. Firstly, the adhesive itself heats up. Secondly, of course, the rock does too. And thirdly, even the glue in bolt. As a result, the bonding mortar can harden extremely quickly.

We are all familiar with the many glue in bolt protruding from the rock. They are usually due to precisely this circumstance.

Example of a glue in bolt where the adhesive has hardened prematurely. The carabiner eyelet protrudes far too far from the rock. Ideally, it should be completely glued into a groove in the rock!

Therefore our tip. Cool all components! And with normal cooling batteries like in a cool box. Simply place them next to the adhesive cartridges in the haulbag. Also place them in the middle of the material bag with the hooks. This will give you valuable extra minutes of processing time.

In extreme cases, place a cooled cloth around the static mixer. This allows you to delay the hardening of the mortar in it. This saves you having to change or throw away a lot of static mixers!

“Cool the injection mortar and the glue in bolt when bolting in summer. This gives you valuable additional processing time!”

Practical tip – Protective equipment
injection mortar consist of highly irritating chemical components. Therefore, always wear protective goggles and gloves when working with them. This protects your eyes on the one hand. And on the other hand, you prevent the extremely strong binding mortar from sticking under your fingernails!
