ice axe
A so-called “light ice axe” is particularly suitable for glacier traveling gear.

These are very lightweight products made from aluminum. This means that pick, the shaft and the plug-in pick protection are made of this lightweight metal.

Somewhat more robust models, such as the Stubai ice axe Pro Star, already have a steel pick.

The different models are available with or without a wrist strap. The size is selected as follows. If you can support yourself while walking with the ice axe, it is ideal. In other words, the taller a person is, the longer the ice axe should be.

A ice axe should be included on every glacier travelling, even if you don’t always use it straight away!
Ice climbing axes
For steep gullies or flat ice, it is better to buy ice climbing axes for your glacier traveling gear. On the one hand, their ergonomic shape makes them more suitable for steep passages. They also have a different load ratio. As a result, it is easier to drive the picks into the ice than with “normal” ice axes. If you are out and about a lot or on more difficult tours, you should always have a pair with you in your glacier gear.
