The rock hammer – also known as a climbing hammer – is an important piece of equipment. It plays a very important role in both alpine climbing and bolting sheave. That’s why no climbing equipment should be without one!

A small and inexpensive rock hammer that is recommended for beginners. The Stubai Rocky!

But a climbing hammer is not like any other. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. Or rather. Depending on its design and weight, each rock hammer is ideally suited for certain purposes.

In the following, we will therefore give you a brief overview from our point of view.

This classification is based on 30 years of climbing and bolting experience. In addition, we have a few big walls under our belts and know exactly what we are talking about!
Rock hammer for beginners
A small, lightweight hammer is ideal for alpine beginners.

Alpine newcomers will have a lot of fun with a small and light hammer. Firstly, it has little weight. Secondly, it is perfectly adequate for sporadic hooking. Thirdly, hammers such as the Stubai Rocky or CT Thunder are relatively inexpensive.

Our tip for you. Try to either stow the climbing hammer neatly in your rucksack. Or use a holster or holder to attach it to your harness. Some climbing mallets also come with a practical material carabiner.
Climbing hammer for alpine foxes
The Grivel Thor is a typical alpine climbing hammer.

Anyone who does a lot of alpine climbing will be pleased to have a “higher” rock hammer. This usually means a little more weight on the one hand. And also better traction.

Most of these hammers already have a safety loop. Carabiners for attaching to the harness are also usually included. Our recommendations for such a rock hammer are the Grivel “Thor” rock hammer and the Salewa Rock Hammer.

The same applies here. The climbing mallet should always be stowed well on the harness. That way it is always immediately “within reach”. This saves an enormous amount of time and can be extremely valuable in tricky situations!
Hammer for bolting
One of the best alpine and all-round rock hammers on the market, the Camp Brenta!

Developers have to clean a lot. Consequently, they like to have a rock hammer with a long point on the one hand. And a very good pull on the other.

This is the only way to work well with glass mortar cartridges glue in bolt. Because without the right “oomph”, nothing works. Our recommendation: the“Brenta rock hammer” from Cassin.

Incidentally, our recommendation for rock cleaning is the Salewa Rock Hammer mentioned above. Its long nose is perfect for cleaning all rock structures!

And if you work a lot glue in bolt with glass mortar cartridges should get one of the following big wall climbing hammers. Because you really need a lot of “punch” for this type of fixing.
Rock hammer for big wall rats
The Kong Eagle or Eagle Light rock hammer is for big walls!

You need a heavy hammer for big walls. Because there are not only many normal pitons to sink. The second climber has to nail out most of them again. A heavy climbing hammer is also an enormous advantage when fixing copperheads.

Big wall hammers also always have a wooden handle. This absorbs a lot of the energy on impact. This is easy on the hands and arms!

The Kong “Eagle” is definitely our recommendation. If you want to be a touch lighter, choose the “Eagle Light” at the same price.

In addition, the Edelrid Hudson and the Yosemite Hammer are a great choice when it comes to a durable big wall hammer!
Speleo hammers
The Speleo Hammer “Speleagle” from Kong.

Speleo hammers are a somewhat unique type of rock hammer. These are basically the same as a climbing hammer, but with additional details that are practical for caving.

Such as hexagonal openings for M8 expansion bolt or 13mm nuts. That’s why we have two special models in our range.

One is the Speleo Hammer Action from the company Raumer. And secondly, the Speleagle speleologist hammer from Kong.
