The Yosemite Hammer is THE ultra-classic among rock hammers. In fact, this Black Diamond rock hammer has remained unchanged since 1966, when it was personally manufactured by company founder Yvonne Choinard. It was made for the granite walls and extremely hard demands of the Yosemite Valley.
Today, of course, this climbing hammer is manufactured in larger quantities and on an industrial scale. However, the characteristic quality features of the Yosemite hammer have remained unchanged.
Firstly, its handle made of walnut wood. Secondly, the hammer head with reinforced stainless steel fixing. Thirdly, the curved nose to piton to be able to lever out well. Fourthly, the hole in the nose to be able to “pluck out” copperheads.
In short. The absolute rock hammer classic has been the measure of all things for a good 50 years for good reason. Do you do a lot of technical climbing or big walls? Then the Black Diamond rock hammer is the right choice for you!

Lots of weight, lots of punch!
At 700 grams, the Yosemite hammer has a relatively high weight. However, it also provides a lot of punch. In other words, this rock hammer is particularly useful if you want to hammer a lot piton.
That’s what this Black Diamond rock hammer was made for. It is perfect for quickly sinking or nailing out all types of hooks such as Angles, Bongs or Knife Blades.
Ideal for developers
In our opinion, the Yosemite hammer is very well suited for developers. Because it is robust, has a super “pull” and is suitable for all hammer maneuvers that you need when developing.
- Wrapping of expansion bolt
- glue in bolt Set with glass mortar cartridges
- Knock off loose rock sections
- Fixing splints on steel carabiners / lower offs
- Smoothing the rock surface for perfect support bolt hanger
- Cutting off sharp rock edges
Yosemite Hammer – nothing for rock cleaning
Do you want to buy this model to clean rocks? The Black Diamond rock hammer has many strengths. But cleaning rocks is definitely NOT one of them.
We recommend a lighter model with a longer, thinner and more pointed nose!
Attachment to the belt
We know from our own experience. Every rock hammer needs to be stowed well on the harness. The Yosemite hammer is no exception.
It is best to attach the Black Diamond rock hammer to the harness with a gear carabiner. For example, the CT Hammer Lodge, the Edelrid material carabiner SM Clip L 3R or the Petzl Caritool material carabiner.
