The Cassin Baby Angle piton are specially designed for techno climbing. This is because these mini profile hooks only hold the body weight but usually not a fall. Consequently, they are used exclusively for moving and are not used in normal everyday climbing.
However, as part of the big wall gear, they are indispensable. Because this piton fulfills an important task. It covers all shallow cracks and shallow crevices. This means that the Cassin Baby Angle hooks cannot be used very far. This is because their shank length is extremely short.
The three different models have the following impact lengths. Firstly 28mm. Secondly 38mm and thirdly 48mm.

Hello “pin scars”, hello “shallow cracks”!
The Cassin Baby Angle are extremely handy for techno routes for several reasons. Firstly, because they are one of the very few piton that fit perfectly into pin scars. I.e. in old, worn-out hook placements.
And secondly because they are also great to place in shallow cracks. If it is only a matter of holding the body weight, they are also good in normal cracks. This also makes “nailing out” very easy compared to the long V-profile hooks.
Cassin Baby Angle piton – made of high carbon steel
This hook is made of nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel. This means it is made of specially hardened steel with a long service life.
As a result, this hook is particularly suitable for hard rocks such as granite and gneiss. The additional protective lacquer coating also offers additional corrosion protection.
How many hooks do I need?
The topo will usually tell you how many Cassin Baby Angle piton you need at rack. The Supertopo Guidebook, for example, lists the exact number of bolts for each Yosemite Big Wall. There are usually a few per size.
Do not forget! Hooks like to fall off. That’s why you should always have a few in reserve!
