The Grivel Thor rock hammer is a fine all-round hammer. Firstly, it weighs just 490 grams. Secondly, it has a curved, ergonomic handle. This means it sits comfortably in the hand. Thirdly, the handle is properly rubberized. This means it absorbs shocks to the wrist very well. Fourthly, it comes with a functional, stretchable catching arm including a material carabiner.
In short. This hammer is our recommendation for anyone looking for a well-designed and functional rock hammer!

Areas of application
We recommend the Grivel Thor rock hammer for the following applications:
- Alpine climbing
- Climbing area construction with expansion bolt
- Climbing area rebolting with expansion bolt
- Climbing area maintenance
The hammer clearly reaches its limits with big walls and when hand drilling or hammering in glue in bolt with glass mortar cartridges. Here we recommend a much heavier hammer such as the Camp Brenta rock hammer.
Not all rock hammers are the same!
Please note when buying the Grivel Thor rock hammer. Not all hammers are the same. This means that the respective models sometimes have very different areas of application. The Thor hammer is a very good rock hammer for alpine climbing or for sporadically hammering in normal pitons. It is lightweight and has an integrated material carabiner or catching arm.
We have already mentioned the three areas of application for which the product is NOT recommended. Big wall climbing, hand drilling and hammering in glue in bolt with glass mortar cartridges. Heavy, powerful hammers are needed here.
Small all-round hammers, on the other hand, should be somewhat heavier than the Thunder. Such as the Rocky rock hammer from Stubai Bergsport. These are also often better suited to bolting a climbing route or cleaning rocks. This is where, for example, the Camp Brenta rock hammer really comes into its own.
You should therefore think carefully about what you intend to do when buying a rock hammer. It’s worth it!
The Grivel Thor rock hammer is a great rock hammer for alpine climbing.
