Carabiner with splint
At bolting.eu, we are constantly receiving emails and calls from our customers on the subject of “carabiners with splint”. The focus is always on the same questions.
Firstly, which type of carabiner do we recommend for a lower off / climbing anchor?
Secondly, is the splint already pre-assembled? If not, how is it fitted?
Thirdly. How do I remove worn carabiners from stands if they have been attached with a safety pin?
We therefore want to provide the right answers to these questions below.
Carabiner with splint – Types
There are three types of carabiners with locking pins / anti-theft protection.
- screwgate carabiner
- Wire catch
- Keylock snapper
As all carabiners are designed for fixed installation, they are all made of a correspondingly durable, highly abrasion-resistant material. Stainless steel. At bolting.eu we have several models from Austrialpin, Raumer, Kong and Vertical Evolution in our range:

Fixed Draco carabiner
The Draco from Fixe Climbing is not a carabiner with splint for fixing in the true sense of the word. However, it is equivalent in terms of function. It is a deflection carabiner that can be permanently attached. It is also protected against theft. In our opinion, the Draco is the best carabiner on the market with the best price-performance ratio!
Its specially shaped, very thick lower section withstands the abrasion of constant lowering for much longer than any other carabiner. This is what makes the Draco so economical and therefore sustainable.
FAQ’s
A splint is a metal pin that can be screwed or hammered into a carabiner. The function of a splint is to hold the carabiner in a certain position. For carabiners in lower offs / climbing anchors or quickdraws, a splint can also serve as an anti-theft device.
The Austrian mountain sports online store bolting.eu sells these carabiners in its range. The specialist for materials for climbing areas, climbing routes and via ferrata has various products made of steel, stainless steel and aluminum in its range.
These carabiners are usually made of steel or stainless steel. In addition, the hole for the splint has to be produced or the splint is permanently welded in. Therefore, these carabiners usually cost more than aluminum carabiners. Their price at bolting.eu is between € 16.90 and € 26.90.
There are carabiners with pre-assembled, fixed splint. These carabiners can only be attached to a ring, bolt hanger or glue in bolt using a quick link.
carabiners without a pre-mounted splint can be clipped directly into an anchor. The splint is then either hammered in with a hammer or screwed in with a tool such as an Allen key. The best way to learn exactly how to do this is in the Academy at bolting.eu!
The easiest way to remove a carabiner that is fixed with a splint is with strong metal pliers. If the splint is too massive, it can only be removed with an angle grinder.
