The Camp Knifeblade piton is a hard steel hook for the thinnest cracks. It is therefore used in granite on the one hand. On the other hand, it is used especially by alpinists and big wall climbers.
This piton is made of chrome-molybdenum steel and is particularly hard and resistant. It can therefore often be hammered in and out again.
The Camp Knifeblade piton come in three suitable lengths. Firstly, 7.5cm (shaft length 3.5cm) for very shallow cracks. Secondly in 9cm (shaft length 5cm) and thirdly in 10cm (shaft length 6cm).
Please note. None of these hooks are approved as safety hooks in and of themselves. This means that they are basically only for moving around. Or to put it another way. These are pitons for techno climbing.

Hard chromium – molybdenum steel
The Camp Knifeblade piton are made from this particularly hard steel. This means that the hooks can often be hammered in and out again without breaking.
The hard steel also has another purpose. This is because granite generally has very regular, flat surfaces. This means that the cracks often have parallel sides. And here, hard steel “squeezes” perfectly in between with sufficient force. Or to put it another way. Hard steel hooks achieve good strength values here if they are driven in well.
Camp Knifeblade piton = Big Wall Essential
This type of hook is essential for many big walls. Knifeblades are simply great when it comes to very thin cracks. As for example in “The Shield” or “Zodiac” in Yoesmite. In Europe, you’ll need them both in Val di Mello (on Qualido) and in Valle del Orco (on Cardinale) for many techno lines.
In short. This piton should not be missing from any big wall gear.
bolting.eu Practice Tip
We recommend a rock hammer with a little more weight for all hard steel pitons. So if you hammer a lot of pitons in and out, you should get a hammer weighing 500 grams or more.
That’s why we have such a large selection at bolting.eu. Many models from brands such as Camp, Kong, Grivel, Edelrid, Stubai etc…
