The Petzl Universel piton is a special piton. It is a torque hook for so-called “off-withs”. I.e. for cracks that widen outwards. Thanks to the medium-hard steel, it can be used in both limestone and granite.
Petzl is the only manufacturer that uses a medium-hard standard steel for its hooks. This means that the degree of hardness lies exactly between the classic hard steel and mild steel hooks.
We offer the Petzl Universel piton with three different shaft lengths. Firstly in 5cm. Secondly in 7cm. And thirdly in 9cm. So you should be prepared for all crack depths.
The function as a torque hook results from the carabiner eye. This is because it is offset at 45° to the shank. This means that when a force is applied here, it twists the entire hook and it “wedges” itself against the rock. For this reason, the carabiner eyelet is also very small so that the force is transmitted immediately via the carabiner.
Conclusion. No hook range is complete without this model.

Medium-hard steel – only from Petzl
Petzl is the only manufacturer that uses a steel quality for its hooks. This is also the case with the Petzl Universel piton.
In other words, this model is used for both granite and lime. This is made possible by the medium hardness of this standard steel. It is neither as hard and stiff as chrome-molybdenum steel. Nor is it as extremely soft as the carbon steels of the “mild steel hooks”.
Petzl Universel piton = small carabiner eyelet
Another feature of this piton is its small carabiner eye. This was done deliberately. This is because the carabiners “wedge” nicely and the force of a fall immediately presses the torque hook against the sides of the crack.
Three lengths
To cover as many placement options as possible, the Petzl Universel piton is available in three lengths. In other words, there are actually three different shaft dimensions. In addition to the length, the thickness and width are also slightly different.
This results in a really wide range of options for cracks that open up. Consequently, with long walls you always need to have all dimensions with you if you want to be prepared for all eventualities!
