Petzl U piton

The Petzl U piton is designed for medium-width cracks in granite and limestone. This is because this hook has a very characteristic U-profile. This means that it can still wedge perfectly even in wider cracks of approx. 0.5 to 1 cm. And this applies to both limestone and granite.

Petzl is the only manufacturer that uses a medium-hard standard steel for its hooks. This means that the degree of hardness lies exactly between the classic hard steel and mild steel hooks.

We stock the Petzl U piton in both lengths. Firstly with a 10cm shaft length. And secondly with a 12cm shaft length. Consequently, the cracks must be really deep.

In addition to the material, the oval carabiner eye stands out on this hook. This is because it is significantly larger than those of other manufacturers. This has clear advantages on big walls and belay stations.

Medium-hard steel – only from Petzl

Petzl is the only manufacturer that uses a steel quality for its hooks. This is also the case with the Petzl U piton.

In other words, this model is used for both granite and lime. This is made possible by the medium hardness of this standard steel. It is neither as hard and stiff as chrome-molybdenum steel. Nor is it as extremely soft as the carbon steels of the “mild steel hooks”.

Petzl U piton = large carabiner eyelet

Another feature of this piton is its carabiner eye. This is because it is oval on the one hand. It is also significantly wider than all other pitons. This means that two carabiners or one carabiner and one climbing rope into it.

Petzl does this because it generally has advantages on big walls or at belays in alpine terrain. Namely more space. As already described, you can’t just attach one carabiner. There is “leeway” for additional gear.
