Project support

Infrastructure framework

Climbing area construction with expansion bolt

The climbing area development with expansion bolt or bolt hanger makes sense for steep rocks. Firstly, installation is simple. Secondly, the belay points can be loaded immediately.

On the other hand, it is recommended if you want to implement your project quickly and therefore cost-effectively.

However, expansion bolt also has decisive disadvantages. In particular, they require maintenance sooner or later. This is because they consist of a total of 5 components.

This means that the purchase and installation is inexpensive. However, the long-term costs are sometimes quite high due to the maintenance required. This is because water, vibrations from the quickdraws, falls etc. have a constant impact on the components. In short: nuts can loosen, lugs can bend, the wrong quality of steel can cause galvanic corrosion, etc….

When setting up a climbing area with expansion bolt, you must be aware of the increased maintenance effort.

We at bolting.eu therefore recommend the use of glue in bolt if the steepness of the rocks allows it.

Climbing area construction with glue in bolt

If you want to set up a tourist climbing area, we clearly recommend glue in bolt and injection mortar.

This combination is maintenance-free when installed correctly!

On the one hand, this means additional financial and time expenditure during installation. On the other hand, however, it also means considerable savings due to the elimination of waiting.

In addition, glue in bolt have higher extraction values. They also do not cause a blasting effect. What’s more, they can also be used in soft rock or rock with holes, such as sandstone or conglomerate.

Incidentally, we at bolting.eu process glue in bolt strictly according to the specifications of all manufacturers. This means that, unlike most semi-professional suppliers, we drill a vertical channel for the hook eye on the side of the rock. The eyelet is then properly glued into the channel.

Firstly, this ensures that the drilling hole is 100% sealed. Secondly, the glue in bolt is optimally protected against radial twisting. Thirdly, the professional installation ensures maximum retention forces!

Climbing garden holder

Anyone who commissions the construction of a climbing area usually automatically becomes the climbing garden operator. This means that, at least in Austria, the client assumes clear obligations after completion.
These should be adhered to as far as possible for reasons of liability.

Minimum standards that can be expected from the operator of a climbing area(according to the Climbing Area Manual, Province of Tyrol, Innsbruck 2019, page 28):

• The installation and refurbishment must be carried out by authorized persons.
• Only standard-compliant material may be used when installing or renovating climbing areas.
• Regular inspections of climbing areas must be ensured. An annual inspection has so far been considered sufficient by the courts.
• If a hazard cannot be eliminated, a climbing area must be closed. A closure must be clearly marked.
• A maintenance log must document which measures were taken, when they were carried out and who was responsible for their implementation.
